Common questions
How should I prepare for my 3D ultrasound?
Stay well hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment; good hydration helps image clarity. A light snack or something sweet 30–60 minutes before your session may encourage baby to be more active. Most importantly, relax and enjoy the experience.
What is an elective ultrasound, and how is it different from my doctor's ultrasound?
An elective ultrasound is a non-diagnostic ultrasound that gives you and your loved ones dedicated time to bond with your baby in a relaxed setting, with keepsake images. Diagnostic ultrasounds at your doctor's office are medically necessary and focused on assessing growth and development. Our elective services don't replace medical ultrasounds.
Will I be able to hear my baby's heartbeat?
We can see and measure the heartbeat very early, typically around 6 weeks, using 2D and M-mode imaging. Hearing it uses pulsed-wave Doppler, which uses more ultrasound energy. There's no confirmed research showing harm from first-trimester Doppler, but out of caution we usually wait until after 10 weeks, when baby's major organs have formed. We believe in informed choice: if you'd like to hear it earlier, we're happy to talk through the theoretical risks and honor your decision.
Can you tell me how much my baby weighs at an elective ultrasound?
No. Estimating fetal weight requires specific measurements that are part of a diagnostic ultrasound. We're happy to perform a diagnostic growth scan with an order from your healthcare provider; it's read by a radiologist or perinatologist, with a formal report sent to your provider.
